Crooners & Nocturnes

Based on: Two stories from the collection by Kazuo Ishiguro, "Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall"

From the collection of short stories by award winning author Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go) come Crooner and Nocturne. Crooner is the story of Jan, a young jazz guitarist in Venice, who meets one of his musical idols, Tony Gardener, and then jumps at the chance to assist him in a romantic gesture toward his wife Lindy. Nocturne is the story of Steve, a saxophonist who is convinced by his manager and his ex girlfriend that a new face will help his ailing career, but in recovery, his life is turned upside down when he finds out that he's staying next to the magnificent aging starlet, Lindy Gardener.

Crooner
Jan, a young jazz guitarist plays shows for the public with local bands on the streets of Venice. When one day, he notices an aged living legend, singer, Tony Gardner at a table listening to the set. Gathering all his gumption, Jan approaches Tony at the end of the performance. A pleasant man, Tony invites the Jan to sit, later introducing him to the beautiful Mrs. Lindy Gardener, Tony's wife who teases him a bit. But as Lindy leaves, Tony invites Jan to assist him in a very important mission, to accompany Tony as he serenades Lindy from a gondola for their anniversary. That night, Tony and an eager Jan take a gondola to beneath Lindy's window and as Tony sings, Jan begins to realize that their relationship is more complex than he originally imagined.

Nocturne
Steve is journeyman saxophone player who has all but given up on the possibility of headlining as a jazz musician. Relegated to fill-in gigs playing anything but jazz. Though when Steve's manager, Bradley suggests cosmetic facial surgery, he doesn't pay the suggestion much attention. But when the last remnants of his world fall apart when his girlfriend, Helen informs him that she's leaving him for a on old high school flame. In a stroke of charity, Helen, feeling horrible for abandoning Steve at a time when his career seems so hopeless; persuades her new boyfriend, Chris to pay for the surgery suggested by Steve's manager.
Next thing Steve knows, he's living in a hotel room in the closed section of a Beverly Hills hotel, his face completely bandaged as he recovers from his surgery, next door to none other than the now divorced Lindy Gardner who is also recovering from her own surgery. Soon, Steve and Lindy meet and begin a strange and seemingly random friendship as twin outcasts, ultimately leading one another to realizations about love, their respective careers and their lives.
